Maia Walczak

Artist, illustrator and author

Maia Walczak illustrates award winning picture books. In 2016, Otis Lemon & The Spectacular Submarine, a children’s picture book written by Mark Lemon and illustrated by Maia, was awarded the Platinum Junior Design Award 2016 in the Children’s Book of The Year. In 2018, The Magical Wood by the same duo was awarded Bronze in the Best Designed/Illustrated Book for Children category in the Junior Design Awards 2018.

In 2011 Maia created a series of Silent Books – picture books without words – which gained international popularity and were used in schools the world over to encourage writing and creativity in children, as well as to help in language learning and speech therapy. The books have taken her on school visits all around the world.

She writes both for children and adults. Her debut novel, The Colour Black was published by Jacaranda Books in July 2014.

Most of her inspiration comes from time spent in nature. Forests, foraging, surfing, sleeping out under the stars, hiking and birdsong are some of her biggest sources of joy. Born and raised in London to Polish parents, she spent her childhood summers in the cabin her grandfather built in the Polish woods. Also known for her surf inspired art, and artwork on surfboards, longboards and skate decks, Maia now lives on the Cornish coast, from where she creates artwork and designs for a range of clients.

Maia is available for commissions.
